Newsletter Week of 3/19

Dear Friend, On Tuesday night, I hosted an end-of-session presentation to provide a wrap-up on what the legislature accomplished and what I was able to deliver for the people of Fairfax County in Richmond this year.

Here's a quick summary of what we talked about:

Community Updates The Opioid Epidemic Hits Home Monday night I attended the Fairfax County Public Schools' Opioid Awareness Meeting: The Dangers of Fentanyl in Our Community. The message I heard from parents was loud and clear: "It's an emergency. Our kids are dying."

I appreciated the opportunity to learn the facts from experts in the field and what we can do as parents, community members, and legislators to combat this epidemic. Please talk to your kids- it could save their lives.

The data is starting: 1 in 6 pills laced with fentanyl; 18 fatal and 54 nonfatal overdoses right here in Fairfax County this year alone. I pledge to introduce legislation next session to combat this epidemic and never stop fighting for our children and families.

Madison Pyramid Art Show Last week I attended the Madison Pyramid Art Show, which showcased student work from Madison HS, Cedar Lane School, Thoreau MS, Cunningham Park ES, Flint Hill ES, Louise Archer ES, Marshall Road ES, Vienna ES, and Wolftrap ES. Our children are so talented! It is always one of my favorite school events to attend each year! Check out this video produced by Vienna Elementary School!

Madison Girls Basketball Congratulations to the Madison Girls Basketball team on winning the VHSL Championship for the 4th year in a row!

Parkwood School Yesterday I joined the unveiling of a new historical marker commemorating Parkwood School and its founder, Clarene Vickery, who educated thousands of preschool children in the school's 60+ year history. The plaque is placed in front of the school’s former location at the southwest corner of Marshall Road and Ware Street in Vienna. Former students, former teachers, family, friends and elected leaders turned out to remember Mrs. Vickery and to share their memories of the school during the ceremony. Historic Vienna, Inc. recorded an oral history with the founder in 2014. Watch online: https://bit.ly/HVIParkwood

Community Input What do you value the most in public spaces? Residents and non-residents of the Town of Vienna can provide input on what the town should do with the former Faith Baptist Church location. Women In Leadership Thank you to the Moms of the Young Mens Service League (YMSL) Hunter Mill Chapter for inviting me to discuss women in leadership and how we can encourage our children to support the causes they believe in and their community.

St. Patrick's Day Fete! I enjoyed celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this weekend at Congressman Connolly’s 29th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Fete! Always grateful to spend time with our Fairfax Firefighters!

Collective Bargaining For All Congratulations to the amazing employees of the Fairfax County Public Schools on the School Board's decision to pass Collective Bargaining rights for its 25,000+ employees!

Re-election I am running for re-election! I just launched my campaign this week for the NEW 12th district! With elections upcoming under the new boundaries following the 2020 U.S. Census, the communities that make up our current 35th House district will be split into the new 11th and 12th House districts (see map below). Type your address into this handy tool to double-check what House district you'll be voting in and if you are in the 12th, I hope to earn your vote this November! And, if you are able, please consider donating to my campaign to help me get re-elected. It has truly been an honor to serve our community and represent your voices these last few months and I hope you will send me back to Richmond to do it again! Upcoming Events in Our District

March 18th-May 13th: Mayor's Fitness Challenge The Town of Vienna, the City of Fairfax and the City of Falls Church are hosting the third annual Mayors' Fitness Challenge. This is a great opportunity for Town residents and employees to get involved in a healthy competition to determine the "Most Fit Community" of 2023! Walk, bike, hike, practice yoga or play in the park - the opportunities are endless! Rally your family, friends and co-workers who live or work in Vienna to join in on the fun. During this eight-week competition, participants track their minutes doing any physical exercise and log their minutes to a daily or weekly web form that will be sent to each participant. At the end of the challenge, participation numbers and minutes will be tallied and averaged to determine which community gets the title of "Most Fit Community." Let's bring the gold cup to Vienna for the second year in a row! March 31st: Vienna Flashlight Egg Hunt
